The former Town Hall

The former Town Hall was located at Kossuth u. 28, where the Goldmark Károly Cultural Centre now stands.

The current building of the town hall was built in 1769 as a county lodging house, designed by Kristóf Hofstädter. It was later rebuilt, and that is when it acquired its present Zopf-style façade. A memorial plaque on the building proclaims that, between 1865 and 1897, the Agricultural Institute — opened as the successor to the former Georgikon — operated in this building. Its renovation was completed in 1990. During the restoration, the architects discovered that frescoes lay beneath multiple layers of plaster. From then on, the renovation took a new direction. Through careful work, the ceremonial hall was uncovered, the existence of which no one had known about until then. The frescoes were repainted by László Haraszti. The town's former leadership decided to have a portrait series made of the citizens who had done much for the town. The only surviving piece of the series is the picture of Vencel Reischl (by an unknown painter).

Through an energy-efficiency renovation, all external doors and windows were replaced and the façade surfaces were renewed in 2015. The replacement of the rotten elements of the roof structure and of the entire battening, together with the fitting of a vapour-barrier membrane and new roof tiles, was carried out in 2017.

The Reischl family resettled from Moravia to Hungary, became true Hungarians, were master brewers, and for generations held the office of town magistrate. Vencel Reischl was the town magistrate of Keszthely for almost 33 years (1861–1893). His grandson, Imre Reischl, was the leading figure of Keszthely between 1911 and 1936.
