Little Balaton Visitor Centre
Discover the natural treasures of the strictly protected Little Balaton. A land tour or a water tour?
At the Little Balaton it's possible. You can get to know the wildlife and natural treasures even in the company of an expert.
The Little Balaton — one of our wetland habitats that is outstandingly valuable even by European standards — lives in the public consciousness in many ways: a bird reserve, a national park, a Ramsar site, the birthplace of institutionalised Hungarian nature conservation in the person of the first nature warden — the former "egret guard" (kócsagőr) — the romantic setting of István Fekete's novels, the fish nursery of Lake Balaton, a water-protection system and an ecotourism destination.
Contact, getting there:
The visitor centre can be reached by turning off the section of Main Road 76 between Sármellék and Balatonszentgyörgy. About 5.5 km from Sármellék, you have to turn off to the right, or, coming from Balatonszentgyörgy, about 1.5 km from the Zala bridge and the railway crossing, turn off to the left and cross a railway crossing. A brown information sign also indicates from both directions where to turn off, reading "Kis-Balaton Kutatóház" (Little Balaton Research House). You will first see the machine depot of the West Transdanubian Water Directorate, but you should not go in there; instead, turn left and continue to the last building.
