Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church

The most modern and newest church can be seen clearly even from the beginning of the main street leading into the town, as its blue spires soar into the sky. The Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, opposite the town hall, can accommodate around 1,000 people. The church was built according to the designs of architect János Bocskai.

It was built over three years with the support of the town and its residents. The seven towers soaring towards the sky guide visitors to the town from afar. The seven towers symbolise the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit.

It was inaugurated together with the Town Hall on 9 September 1999, and was consecrated by the by-then retired archbishop József Szendi.

In the church interior, modern architecture and tradition blend together, emphasised above all by the beautiful wood panelling. Thanks to its good acoustics, it is also suitable for holding organ concerts. The stained-glass windows, reminiscent of Gothic-style forms, are the work of Hévíz artist Endre Simon. The crucifix torso on the wall of the sanctuary is a 200-year-old art treasure that came to the church as a donation; its restoration was carried out by restorer and painter Gyula Károlyi.

The bronze statue of Christ on the left side of the altar is the work of László Marton. Also his work is the bronze statue titled "Our Lady of Hungary", wearing the Hungarian crown, standing on the right side. The fire-enamel pictures on the walls were made by László Morvay. The timber structure was made by Tibor Kováts and the interior woodwork by András Hegedűs.

There are four bells in the towers. Several statues and reliefs can be found in the church garden and nearby.

For structural reasons, no bell was placed in the tallest tower. Two bells ring in the tower on the left: one was cast in honour of St Peter by Dr Béla Horváth and his family, while the other was moved here from the old church. One bell in the tower on the right was cast in honour of St Paul from the donations of the widow of Imre Varga, while its other bell also comes from the old church.
