Mill Lake

Tapolca's most atmospheric attraction by far — unparalleled even by national comparison — is the lakeside main square: the atmosphere of the Mill Lake and the row of houses of medieval origin built beside it does not easily let the visitor go.

The area around the Mill Lake has been inhabited for seven thousand years, and, as the sight itself suggests, this was the town centre already in the Middle Ages. The stream was dammed up as early as the Romans' time. The mill that can still be seen today — based on the stylistic features of the building — was probably built in the 13th–14th centuries, but a predecessor of it was already operating here in the Árpád era. A characteristic feature of the mill building is its unplastered lower level. At the end of the next pond, another mill once operated as well.
